James Castle at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Another show that literally left me speechless. James Castle (1900-1977), was born deaf in a rural town in Idaho. Supposedly illiterate, his explorations of typography, codes and symbolism were crafted on found pieces of mail from the local post office, the pages of mail order catalogs and other printed materials. He rendered his simple surroundings in drawings made of soot from the woodstove and his own spit. He pretty much wanted to do nothing but his art during his lifetime and fortunately for us, his family let him. His work is a language that is completely personal, yet totally universal. You can almost hear him think. Highly recommended. Closes soon.
