MONA LISAS AND ALPACAS


My friends Ann and Dane have an alpaca farm in Pennsylvania. Alpacas use an elaborate series of sounds to communicate: humming (done when curious, content, worried, bored, fearful, distressed or cautious). They also whine (a version of humming), snort (if a friend is being too familiar), grumble (to mark their food trough territory), cluck (a nursing mother does it when you get too close), scream (when extra fearful), screech (when fighting over food), alarm call (when a predator appears) and orgle (when mating). To me they look like outer space aliens stopping in for a quick hello on their way out of town...
