In Honor of Dr. Ari Kiev
I've photographed many famous and infamous people over the years including President Bill Clinton, Bernard Madoff and dozens of CEOs of global companies. There always seems to be a story to tell after working with these sorts of high profile people.
One of my favorite subjects ever was Dr. Ari Kiev, a psychiatrist who worked with top athletes and hedge fund traders (two groups that I wouldn't always put together in one sentence) to help them achieve peak performance. He was fascinating and insightful. I did two shoots with him over ten years...one in his office and one in my studio.
At one point we did a book exchange..my fine art and children's books for multiple copies of his amazing little volume called "A Strategy for Daily Living." I found it so incredibly useful and recommended it to dozens of friends. I can honestly say that this book changed my life and I still practice many of his principles to this day.
Dr. Kiev talked a lot about how one's mental state directly affects the outcome of his or her life. While this concept is not new now, he was writing about it in the 1960s and 1970s, long before Eckhart Tolle and countless others. What I like most about his writing is that it steers cleared of sensationalism, new age leanings or preaching, and instead conveys ideas that are based on both clinical research and his own personal life experiences, which are fascinating and varied.
I am sad to report that Dr. Kiev passed away last week. He was amazing subject. My photographs are on several of his book jackets and I am truly honored to be able to say that.
